The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), or PMAY(U), is a flagship housing scheme launched by the Government of India Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). It was introduced on 25 June 2015 to provide affordable housing to urban poor families by 2022. Through this scheme, the government wants to provide Pucca houses to all eligible urban households by 2022 among the EWS/LIG and MIG categories. However, the Union Cabinet has decided to extend PMAY(U) till 31 December 2024. Under PMAY-U, every house has basic utility things like a kitchen, toilet, water supply, and electricity.
Objective for PMAY-U
The primary objectives of PMAY-U are as follows-

Housing for All: The government ensures every urban household has access to a pucca (permanent) house with basic amenities by 2022, now extended to 2024.

Inclusivity: It is available for the economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG).

Slum Rehabilitation: Rehabilitating slum dwellers by providing them with safe and sanitary housing.
Highlights of the PMAY Scheme

Subsidized Interest Rate: Low Subsidized Interest Rate. Candidates get a 6.50% p.a. interest rate on housing loans for 20 years.

Priority for Special Groups: There is a different ground floor allocation for all the abled and senior citizens.

Eco-Friendly Construction: All houses built in the scheme are Sustainable and environmentally conscious technologies advanced.

Pan-India Coverage: This scheme spans 4041 statutory towns, with initial priority given to 500 Class I cities in 3 phases.

Early Credit-Linked Subsidy: Early Credit-Linked Subsidy will begin as the project inception. It covers all the statutory towns in India
Eligibility Criteria for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)
To qualify for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), candidates need to meet the following requirements.
Income Criteria:

EWS: Annual household income up to ₹3 lakh.

LIG: Annual household income between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh.

MIG-I: Annual household income between ₹6 lakh and ₹12 lakh.

MIG-II: Annual household income between ₹12 lakh and ₹18 lakh.
House Ownership: Candidates or any family member should not own a pucca house in India.
Aadhaar Card: The candidate holds a valid Aadhar card.
PMAY-Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme: The candidate or any family member should not be a beneficiary of a PMAY-Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme.
